We did it, kids.
In addition to passing HCR, Nancy Pelosi has officially become THE most effective Speaker of the House.
Bonus points for being a woman. And a hot one, at that.

A friend of mine made me aware of this :

The nutballs are picking up... we need to expose this if we see it.  People like this need to be revealed and have accounts deleted.

Political dissent is one thing -- advocating this crap?  No way this can be tolerated..

Huh. It's been a while.

Well, there was a week, and I had it. Very stressful, for reasons I can't get into. Meanwhile, my new glasses finally came in yesterday, so things are a bit wonky. I have nearsightedness and astigmatism, so basically the near distance looks a lot clearer and closer now, which messes with my depth perception. I mean, for example: the floor. I've managed not to fall over yet, but it makes me a bit dizzy, and I'm squinting a little to compensate while my eyes get used to the new lenses. Headaches are involved.

I've been having fun at Tumblr, but you can post a whole bunch of stuff but put it in a queue that parcels things out every hour, half hour, whatever, so as not to spam everyone. So it's actually been auto-posting for me all weekend. (A lot of times I'll pick an arbitrary theme for the day, based on what I've got in my drafts. Yesterday was a sort of general gothic and/or stripes theme; today is spring flowers and/or woods. St. Patrick's Day was green, which involved many things relating to absinthe. Other days are just whatever.)

Have slowed down on the Formspring questions for a while. Will probably get to those as soon as I need to procrastinate again.

Trying to read for research, but the newness of the glasses is making that a bit hard. I should be able to watch movies again, though, without squinting at the TV across the room. To that end:

Team Jasper: A team for the rest of us. “He almost eats Bella, which is a huge plus."

I ended up at Walmart yesterday, so NOOOOO THEY GOT MY MOM )

Many of us dream of dressing up as a deckhand, Viper pilot or officer. But unless you were lucky enough to win an original costume at a prop auction, it's quite time-consuming to assemble an authentic-looking uniform or coverall.

But thanks to Anovos, that is about to change. A small Californian company, Anovos obtained the official license to sell replicas of double tank tops, BDUs and duty blues, as well as patches, pins and blasters. Some of their products are "created from original manufacturers with processes used on original screen used items".

They plan on selling the first replicas soon.

More info on prices and future expansions of the product line: Anovos and UGO

I would like to warn you against buying any of these Alphascript books:

Battlestar Galactica (2004 TV series)
Laura Roslin
Cylon (reimagining)

Those books aren't traditional non-fiction books. They are just unedited reprints of various Wikipedia articles related to the title topic. What's even more outrageous is that Alphascript wants you to pay up to 70 bucks for this "service".

This has no point, other than the fact that I'm bored.

I figured out BSG. )

Being laid off last October was one of the best things that ever happened to me-- sometimes you have to do something you really hate before you find your true passion and purpose in life.

The two secrets below come from all those collected at the Yellowstone Art Museum PostSecret Exhibit. That exhibit has closed but two others are now open at Kennesaw State University (this week only) and at the American Visionary Art Museum.

I had a great opportunity to share some political thought with my son, who is turning 11 on Monday and who is just beginning to become informed about politics. Actually, he started a couple of years ago; his school talked about the Presidential election while the campaign was going on. I still have the mini biography that he was issued in his reading class. The rather nice, simple bio is titled Barack Obama. On it, over Obama's picture, my son wrote the word CHANGE in his 8 or 9 year old childish scrawl. He got the message. :)

Anyway, he and I walked 3 blocks to my sister-in-law's house last night for Shabbat dinner, since my wife and one daughter are out of town, and my other daughter was in a youth activity at one of the local synagogues. We walked by one house, and in the side window of this house were two signs. One said VOTE DEMOCRATIC, and the other said HEALTH CARE CAN'T WAIT.

I stopped and invited my son to read the signs, then explained what the health care sign meant. I then offered to him that this is something his mother and I are all in favor of, because we are liberals.

And then came the question. "Dad, what's a liberal?".

How to summarize it on the spot for an eleven year old? Tricksy. So I said "A liberal is someone who believes that as many resources should be spread to as many people as possible, to do the most good that can be done. The opposite is someone who hoards everything to themselves and who doesn't want to share. That's a conservative."

A bit polarized. :) But I went on to explain that, unfortunately most religious people in the Jewish community are conservative. He stopped in his tracks because this did not compute. "But dad!", he protested, "the Torah says we're supposed to share! Almost every religion says that people have to share what they have with those who don't have as much!". Astute mind on this one.

We continued talking a little more, had a Shabbat dinner that couldn't be beat (thank you Arlo), and on the walk back we saw the lady who lived in that house pulling into her garage! So I took the opportunity to tell her what my son and I had discussed, and to thank her for putting the signs in the window. She loved my explanation of "liberal". :)
